Psychology of Colors

Psychology of Colors

Unbeknownst to many the colors of your home are a direct reflection of you and your personality. While it seems as though we just go into the store, pick a color, and walk out, it is way more to it. The color of a wall or the whole room can influence our thoughts and mood. Color affects people differently. It all depends on age, gender, ethnic back ground and even the temperature. Although certain colors seem tend to get the same reaction, the variations come from the shades and tone used, thus altering one’s perception. This is why it is so important to choose colors wisely when it comes to your home.

Each color has a psychological value. Think about it, how certain colors make you feel. Colors act in three basic ways active, passive and neutral. Red. Red raises a room’s energy level; this is an active color. It can draw people into the room and stimulate conversation. This color would be good for living rooms and dining rooms also if in an entry way it can create a strong first impression. Yellow. Yellow creates joy and happiness, an excellent choice for kitchens and bathrooms. Even as a cheery color it is not ideal for a main color scheme. Studies show that tempers are extremely high in a yellow interior. Blue. Blue is the color of relaxation. It can bring down blood pressure and a high heart rate. Making this color ideal for bedrooms.

Green. Green is the restful color, in the kitchen it can cool things down, and in the living room it can bring a sense of togetherness, more importantly it can bring calmness in the bedroom and relieve stress. Purple expresses luxury and creativity in its richest form. A lighter form of purple brings the same traits as the color blue. Orange is a loud color, full of excitement and energy, not ideal for anything but an exercise room. It’s too emotional and can bring out the worst attitudes. Last but not least neutrals, which are very flexible colors. They can liven things up or calm them down. Really easy which is why they are everybody’s go to color.

As a general rule dark walls make the room seem smaller while light walls can make the room feel bigger. Remember color choice is a personal matter, you are the only one who has to live with the color that you chose. So pick a color that best fits you and your lifestyle and enjoy!
